India has emerged as the world’s second-largest supplier of seafarers, surpassing China and strengthening its position as a global maritime talent hub. According to the BIMCO-ICS Seafarer Workforce Report 2026, India now contributes 311,936 seafarers, representing 12.16% of the global maritime workforce.
The report highlights India’s remarkable progress over the past decade. From ranking fifth globally in 2015 with a 5.2% share, the country has more than doubled its contribution to secure second place, behind only the Philippines. India’s maritime workforce includes 140,718 officers and 171,218 ratings, underscoring its growing strength in skilled seafaring professionals.
The milestone reflects India’s expanding maritime training ecosystem, improved skill development and increasing global demand for Indian seafarers. It also reinforces the country’s ambitions to become a leading force in the global shipping and maritime industry.
