Viking has launched its second hydrogen-powered cruise ship, Viking Astrea, at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard in Italy. The vessel has now entered the final stages of construction and is scheduled for delivery in May 2027.
Viking Astrea is designed to operate with zero emissions using a hybrid propulsion system based partly on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. The system, developed with Fincantieri subsidiary Isotta Fraschini Motori, will be capable of producing up to 6 megawatts of power.
The 54,300-tonne ship will have 499 staterooms and accommodate up to 998 passengers. Following delivery, it is expected to operate itineraries across the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
Viking Astrea follows Viking Libra, which is scheduled for delivery in November 2026 and is being positioned as the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions. Both vessels are being built at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard.
The two ships highlight the cruise industry’s growing focus on alternative propulsion technologies as shipping companies look for ways to reduce emissions. Viking’s investment in hydrogen could also help demonstrate how fuel-cell technology can be integrated into large passenger vessels for cleaner maritime travel.
