Bengaluru-based space startup Astrobase Space is set to unveil India’s first fully integrated reusable Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) rocket engine on August 7. The 80-tonne-class methane-fuelled engine represents one of the most advanced propulsion technologies in the world, with the FFSC cycle known for delivering higher efficiency, greater thrust and improved reusability.
The engine is being developed for reusable medium- and heavy-lift launch vehicles capable of carrying payloads ranging from three to ten tonnes. Astrobase has also secured support under IN-SPACe’s Technology Adoption Fund to accelerate development of its indigenous 800 kN LOX–methane rocket engine, strengthening India’s private space capabilities.
Astrobase’s long-term roadmap includes full-scale engine testing, reusable launch vehicle development and a maiden orbital launch targeted for 2029. If successful, the project could significantly lower launch costs and position India as a stronger player in the global commercial space industry.
