From graduating in electrical engineering from IIT Bombay to co-founding Infosys and helping build Aadhaar, Nandan Nilekani has played a major role in shaping India’s technology landscape.
His academic journey began at IIT Bombay, where he studied electrical engineering. He later went on to co-found Infosys, building one of India’s most successful technology companies.
Nilekani’s public-sector journey took another major turn when he became associated with the Aadhaar project, helping create the technology and institutional framework behind India’s digital identity ecosystem.
Now, his experience in technology and large-scale digital infrastructure has brought him to a new national assignment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appointed Nilekani to head a high-powered task force tasked with recommending reforms to India’s examination system.
The panel is expected to examine technology, logistics and structural changes to make examinations more secure, transparent and efficient. The move comes amid growing concerns over paper leaks and irregularities in high-stakes examinations.
From building a global technology company to helping create a digital identity system used at national scale, Nilekani’s next challenge is to help reshape how India conducts its examinations.
