The Government of India has declared Monday, July 13, as a one-day State Mourning following the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir and former Emir of Qatar. The decision reflects the close diplomatic ties between India and Qatar and honours Sheikh Hamad’s contribution to strengthening bilateral relations.

During the period of mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings where it is regularly displayed. The government has also announced that there will be no official entertainment throughout the day.
Sheikh Hamad, who served as Qatar’s Emir from 1995 to 2013, is widely credited with transforming the Gulf nation into a global economic and diplomatic powerhouse. Under his leadership, Qatar emerged as one of the world’s leading LNG exporters and significantly expanded its international influence.
India and Qatar have maintained strong relations across trade, energy, investment and people-to-people ties. The observance of State Mourning underscores India’s respect for the late leader and the enduring partnership between the two nations.
