Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that Delhi’s public buses could eventually run on hydrogen produced from segregated municipal waste, outlining a vision that combines clean mobility with sustainable waste management. According to Gadkari, municipal garbage can be processed through biodigesters to generate green hydrogen, which can then be used as fuel for buses.

Speaking at a youth conclave in Delhi, Gadkari said that waste should be viewed as a valuable resource rather than a burden. He added that converting garbage into hydrogen would help reduce landfill waste while producing clean fuel for public transport.
The minister also highlighted the government’s broader efforts to improve waste utilisation, noting that millions of tonnes of landfill waste have already been used in infrastructure projects. He reiterated the goal of eliminating garbage dumps across the country by 2027 through innovative waste-management technologies.
If realised, the initiative could mark a major step towards zero-emission public transport, lower urban pollution and strengthen India’s transition to a circular economy powered by clean energy.
