Global shipping and logistics major Maersk is in discussions to build more small ships in India, including tugs and feeder container vessels, as it expands its long-term engagement with the country’s maritime sector. The move reflects the company’s growing confidence in India’s shipbuilding capabilities and aligns with the government’s vision of making the country a global shipbuilding hub.
According to Maersk, discussions are underway with Indian shipyards to construct smaller vessels that support port operations and regional cargo movement. The company said it is also interested in building larger container ships in India in the future, but noted that the availability of larger dry docks will be crucial before such projects can be undertaken.

The announcement comes as Maersk strengthens its manufacturing footprint in India. The company recently placed an order for 1,000 Made-in-India export-import shipping containers and has expanded collaboration with Indian maritime companies, signalling its commitment to the country’s growing logistics and manufacturing ecosystem.
If these shipbuilding plans materialise, they are expected to generate employment, encourage technology transfer and enhance the competitiveness of Indian shipyards. The initiative also supports India’s broader efforts to become a major global centre for maritime manufacturing, logistics and export-oriented shipbuilding.
