For Nitin Sharma, the idea of washing cars without water began as a response to a growing environmental problem. The Pune-based MBA dropout took over his family’s car wash business and eventually transformed it into GoWaterless, a venture focused on 100% waterless car cleaning.
The turning point came during the severe water crisis of 2016, when falling groundwater levels and drying wells made conventional car washing increasingly difficult. Instead of relying on water tankers, Sharma began exploring ways to clean vehicles without using water.

He invested around ₹10 lakh, along with his wife’s savings, into developing and testing a suitable waterless cleaning solution. After years of research and experimentation, the venture developed an eco-friendly cleaning formulation designed to clean and protect vehicle surfaces without conventional water-based washing.
The business gradually gained acceptance among customers who were initially sceptical about whether a car could be properly cleaned without water. Sharma then expanded through a franchise model, allowing the concept to reach customers across multiple parts of India.
Today, GoWaterless has grown into a much larger operation. Recent reports put the venture’s annual revenue at around ₹4 crore, while the business claims to save approximately 12 lakh litres of water every day.
The company’s expansion has also taken the model beyond a single car wash operation. Earlier reports said GoWaterless had built a network of more than 200 franchises across 22 states, turning water conservation into the central proposition of its business model.
Sharma’s journey demonstrates how an environmental challenge can become an entrepreneurial opportunity. Instead of treating water scarcity simply as a constraint, he used it to rethink an everyday service and create a business around conservation.
As India’s cities face increasing pressure on water resources, water-efficient businesses such as GoWaterless could become increasingly relevant. For Sharma, the objective goes beyond building a profitable company, it is about changing how people think about something as routine as washing a car.
