India could see electric flying taxi services by 2028, potentially transforming urban mobility in some of the country’s busiest cities.
Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai are among the cities that could benefit from the emerging air-taxi ecosystem, particularly for faster airport connectivity.
The proposed services would use electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, or eVTOLs, which can take off and land vertically without requiring conventional runways.
One of the key promises of air taxis is significantly shorter travel times. Airport journeys that currently take much longer due to road congestion could potentially be completed in around 20 minutes, depending on the route and operating conditions.
Flying taxis are being viewed as a potential solution to growing congestion in India’s major metropolitan areas. By shifting a portion of urban transportation into the air, eVTOL services could provide faster point-to-point connectivity.
However, the launch of commercial air taxis will depend on several factors, including aircraft certification, safety approvals, infrastructure, airspace management and regulatory clearances.
India’s growing electric mobility and aerospace ecosystem could support the development of this new mode of transportation, with domestic companies increasingly exploring eVTOL technology.
If the 2028 target is achieved, flying taxis could mark a major shift in India’s urban transportation landscape, particularly for time-sensitive airport travel.
