Hyderabad-based Abyom SpaceTech and Defence has completed the qualification test campaign for what it describes as India’s first fully indigenous reusable liquid rocket engine developed entirely in-house. The tests were conducted at the company’s commercial test facility in Shamirpet near Hyderabad.
The successful campaign marks an important step in the development of the company’s reusable launch vehicle ambitions, including its Flight Ready Engine programme and HOPE vertical take-off and vertical landing reusable rocket project. The tests validated critical technologies required for reusable rocket operations.

According to the company, the propulsion system, control architecture, instrumentation and data acquisition systems were all designed and developed internally, demonstrating a fully indigenous testing and propulsion ecosystem.
Abyom says the breakthrough could help reduce launch costs, strengthen India’s space and defence capabilities, and reduce dependence on foreign propulsion technologies. The startup, incubated at BITS Pilani Hyderabad, is focused on developing reusable rockets and advanced propulsion systems for future commercial and strategic missions.
The achievement highlights the growing role of private Indian space companies in advancing reusable launch technologies and supporting the country’s expanding space economy.
