Mahindra is moving ahead with the first 800 acres of its planned 1,500-acre manufacturing complex in Nagpur, which is set to become the company’s largest integrated manufacturing facility in India.
The mega facility will produce automobiles and tractors using different powertrains, including internal-combustion engines and electric technology. Once fully operational, it is expected to have an annual production capacity of more than 6 lakh vehicles and tractors.
The Nagpur project is being designed as a flexible manufacturing hub, allowing Mahindra to change its production mix based on market demand as India moves towards electric vehicles. The facility will also add significant capacity as the company expands its SUV and EV businesses.
Mahindra is also planning a 150-acre supplier park in Sambhajinagar. Components produced by suppliers at the park will support the new Nagpur facility as well as Mahindra’s existing plants in Chakan and Nashik, creating a larger manufacturing and supply network across Maharashtra.
The first 800-acre land package accounts for more than half of the land planned for the full Nagpur complex and marks an important step towards the development of the project.
Once completed, the 1,500-acre Nagpur facility will be Mahindra’s largest manufacturing site in India. Its size will be more than twice the land area of the company’s Chakan facility and around ten times that of its Nashik plant.
Mahindra has not yet revealed which vehicle models or platforms will be produced at the Nagpur facility. However, the company has said the plant will support multiple powertrains and future technologies, giving it flexibility to respond to changing customer demand.
The supplier park in Sambhajinagar is expected to play a wider role by supplying components to three Mahindra plants in Nagpur, Chakan and Nashik.
Along with the physical infrastructure, Mahindra is also preparing its workforce for the new facility. The company plans to set up a skilling centre in Nagpur to train workers in areas such as mechanical operations, welding and painting.
Experienced employees from Mahindra’s existing manufacturing facilities will also be considered for roles at the new plant. Over the next two to three years, they will go through a selection process based on technical skills, workplace behaviour, Mahindra’s values and teamwork.
The approach will allow Mahindra to combine experienced workers with locally trained talent as it prepares for production at the greenfield facility.
The company has not yet announced the total number of jobs the Nagpur project will create. Further details on workforce requirements and employment opportunities are expected as the project progresses.
At full scale, the Nagpur manufacturing complex will give Mahindra capacity to produce more than 6 lakh automobiles and tractors every year while allowing the company to respond to the changing demand for petrol, diesel and electric vehicles.
