India’s food safety regulator FSSAI has sought clarification from quick commerce company Blinkit after a complaint from a customer who allegedly fell ill after consuming curd ordered through the platform.

According to sources, the complaint was submitted in writing to FSSAI and included a medical prescription. The individual claimed to have developed severe stomach pain and diarrhoea shortly after eating the curd, requiring medical treatment.
Following the complaint, FSSAI wrote to the CEO of Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd and the person responsible for operations on May 29, asking for an explanation and a detailed action taken report.
Officials said similar complaints have been received in recent times through social media and other channels, alleging delivery of spoiled or unhygienic food items via the Blinkit platform.
FSSAI has instructed the company to respond under provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, which places responsibility on food business operators to ensure the safety of food they store, distribute, or sell.
The regulator had earlier also sought clarification from Blinkit over complaints related to poor-quality eggs sold on its platform, taking suo motu cognisance of consumer concerns online.
In another recent case, FSSAI issued a notice to IRCTC after a viral video showed unhygienic practices involving utensil washing inside a train compartment, highlighting its wider crackdown on food safety violations across platforms.
