The Union Cabinet has approved the upgradation and modernisation of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport through a long-term public-private partnership model.

According to the government, the project will involve the participation of a private partner under a long-term licence agreement aimed at improving passenger facilities, cargo handling capacity, operational efficiency, and aviation infrastructure.
Officials say the airport modernisation is expected to support rising passenger traffic and strengthen Nagpur’s position as a strategic logistics and connectivity hub in central India. The city is already considered an important cargo and multimodal transport centre due to its geographic location.
The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities and attract investments in aviation-linked businesses, warehousing, logistics, tourism, and regional economic development.
Industry experts believe the PPP model could accelerate infrastructure upgrades while improving operational standards and service quality at regional airports across India. The decision reflects India’s broader push to modernise aviation infrastructure and expand air connectivity nationwide.
