Tata Power is in discussions with three Indian states to develop small modular nuclear reactor projects as the company expands its clean energy ambitions.
According to reports, Tata Power is currently preparing feasibility studies and detailed project reports for two proposed small modular reactor projects with a planned capacity of 220 megawatts each.

The company is reportedly in talks with Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Odisha while also engaging with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited on technical and regulatory aspects of the projects.
India has recently opened the nuclear power sector to greater private participation as part of its long-term strategy to increase nuclear power generation capacity from around 8 gigawatts to 100 gigawatts by 2047.
Industry experts say small modular reactors, commonly known as SMRs, are emerging as a major focus area because they require less land, can be deployed closer to industrial zones, and may offer faster project execution compared to traditional large nuclear plants.
Analysts believe Tata Power’s nuclear expansion plans reflect India’s growing focus on diversifying clean energy sources beyond solar and wind as electricity demand continues rising rapidly across the country.
