and the United Arab Emirates are continuing to strengthen their strategic partnership across energy, trade, and defence, as wider geopolitical tensions in West Asia reshape regional priorities.

At the centre of this evolving relationship is the shared interest in energy security, maritime stability, and long-term economic cooperation. The UAE remains one of India’s key energy suppliers, while India is a major consumer of Gulf crude and natural gas, making the relationship structurally important for both sides.

Growing strategic alignment

The leadership engagement between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has helped accelerate cooperation beyond traditional trade ties.

Recent discussions between the two sides have focused on expanding collaboration in:

  • Defence manufacturing and technology
  • Cybersecurity and counter-terrorism
  • Maritime security and logistics infrastructure
  • Industrial and innovation partnerships

Both countries have also shown interest in improving connectivity across key trade corridors linking India, the Gulf, and the broader Middle East region.

Energy routes and regional sensitivity

A major factor shaping this partnership is the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints for oil and gas transport. Any disruption in this region has direct implications for global energy markets, particularly for import-dependent economies like India.

The UAE’s ports on the Gulf of Oman, including Fujairah, are often viewed as strategically significant because they provide alternative shipping routes outside the Strait of Hormuz.

Economic and infrastructure cooperation

Beyond energy, both countries are expanding investment and infrastructure collaboration. Projects involving logistics corridors, rail links, and port connectivity across the Gulf and Levant region are being explored to improve trade efficiency and regional integration.

The UAE has also positioned itself as a global logistics and investment hub, while India continues to scale up its role in Middle Eastern supply chains and manufacturing networks.

Broader geopolitical backdrop

The partnership is unfolding against a backdrop of shifting alliances in West Asia, where countries are balancing relations with the United States, regional powers, and emerging economic blocs.

While tensions involving Iran, Gulf states, and global powers continue to influence regional security discussions, India has maintained a position focused on strategic autonomy and energy stability.

Outlook

India and the UAE are expected to continue deepening cooperation in energy, defence, and infrastructure, with both sides viewing the relationship as a long-term stabilizing partnership in an increasingly uncertain regional environment.
