Rahul Bhatia, co-founder of IndiGo, has taken over as interim CEO following the sudden resignation of Pieter Elbers, marking a key leadership shift at India’s largest airline.
Bhatia co-founded IndiGo in 2005 along with Rakesh Gangwal and played a central role in transforming it into a dominant force in Indian aviation.

He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in Canada and began his entrepreneurial journey in 1989, later building InterGlobe Enterprises into a major aviation and hospitality group.
IndiGo today is India’s largest airline by passenger market share, operating thousands of daily flights across domestic and international routes.
Bhatia’s wealth primarily comes from his significant stake in InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, placing him among the leading figures in the aviation industry.
His return to an active leadership role comes at a crucial time, as IndiGo navigates operational challenges and intensifying competition in India’s fast-growing aviation sector.
