China is advancing plans for a massive 120+ km undersea rail tunnel across the Bohai Strait, aiming to connect the port cities of Dalian and Yantai.

Once completed, the high-speed rail tunnel is expected to reduce travel time from nearly 8 hours to just 40 minutes, with trains running at speeds of up to 250 km/h.
Spanning over 120 km in total length, with nearly 90 km beneath the seabed, the project is set to become the longest undersea tunnel in the world, surpassing existing benchmarks like Japan’s Seikan Tunnel and the Channel Tunnel.
The ambitious project is part of China’s broader strategy to boost regional connectivity, reduce logistics costs, and strengthen economic integration across the Bohai Economic Rim.
However, the tunnel presents significant engineering challenges, including construction through seismic zones and complex geological conditions, making it one of the most technically demanding infrastructure projects ever attempted. If realized, the Bohai Strait tunnel could redefine global standards in undersea transportation and mega infrastructure development, further cementing China’s leadership in large-scale engineering projects.
