The Kerala government has launched a feasibility study to examine the possibility of establishing airstrips in Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod as part of its efforts to strengthen regional air connectivity. Chief Minister V.D Satheesan informed the Assembly that the study is currently underway.

The proposed airstrips are expected to improve access to remote regions, support tourism, facilitate emergency services and create new opportunities for local economic development. The initiative is also aimed at enhancing connectivity to areas that are relatively far from the state’s existing airports.
The feasibility study is being carried out by a joint venture of KIIFCON and RITES, which has been tasked with evaluating technical, financial and environmental aspects before any final decision is taken.
The government has clarified that the project will move forward only after the study confirms its viability. If approved, the proposed airstrips could significantly strengthen Kerala’s regional transport network while supporting tourism and balanced development across the state.
