Navi Mumbai International Airport has quickly emerged as a major aviation hub, becoming the 9th busiest airport in India within just four months of operations.
The airport, which began commercial operations on December 25, 2025, recorded around 393,000 departing seats in April, according to aviation data, placing it among the country’s top 10 busiest airports.

Built with an investment of nearly ₹19,650 crore, the airport is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually in its first phase, with long-term plans to expand capacity to 90 million passengers per year by 2032.
The rapid rise is largely driven by strong travel demand in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and the need to reduce congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which has limited expansion capacity.
Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air have already expanded operations from the new airport, with plans for more routes and higher flight frequencies in the coming months.
Experts believe the airport could climb further in rankings soon, especially with major airline expansions planned, positioning it as a key growth engine for India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector.
