Indian Railways is making ticket changes a lot easier for passengers. From January, travellers will be able to reschedule the travel date of their confirmed train tickets directly through the online booking system.

Right now, anyone who wants to change their journey date has to cancel the existing ticket and book a new one, often losing money to cancellation deductions. The new feature removes that step. Passengers will simply choose a new date, if seats are available, the ticket will be updated.
If the fare for the new journey is higher, passengers will need to pay the difference. There won’t be any cancellation or service fee for the change.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the move aims to make the system fairer and more convenient, calling the old cancellation rule “unfair” to passengers.
While the feature doesn’t guarantee a confirmed seat for the revised date, it gives travellers flexibility—especially those whose plans change unexpectedly.
The update is expected to benefit millions of passengers who currently lose money when rescheduling trips.
