Kalanithi Maran, the chairman of Sun Group, is one of India’s wealthiest business leaders, with an estimated net worth of Rs 33,400 crore, as per the 2024 Hurun India Rich List. His vast empire spans television, print media, film production, digital entertainment, and sports. From launching Sun TV in 1993 to expanding into multiple business sectors, Maran has built an entertainment powerhouse that dominates the Indian media landscape. Early Life and Education

Born on July 24, 1964, in Chennai, Kalanithi Maran comes from a politically influential family. His father, Murasoli Maran, was a well-known politician. He completed his schooling at Don Bosco, Chennai, graduated from Loyola College, Chennai, and later earned an MBA from the University of Scranton, USA.

Building the Sun Group Empire

Maran’s media journey began in 1990 with a Tamil magazine called Poomaalai. His big break came in 1993 when he founded Sun TV, which later expanded into Sun Group, one of India’s largest media conglomerates. Today, the company runs 30+ TV channels, two newspapers, five magazines, a DTH satellite service, an OTT platform, and even owns cricket teams.

As per the 2024 Hurun India Rich List, Maran’s net worth is Rs 33,400 crore, making him India’s 80th richest person. His wealth far exceeds that of Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan (Rs 7,300 crore) and Amitabh Bachchan (Rs 1,600 crore). He is also India’s richest filmmaker, producing blockbuster Tamil movies under Sun Pictures.

Apart from TV and films, Kalanithi Maran has built a massive business empire:

  • Sun TV Network – A leading regional television network.
  • Sun Pictures – Producer of hits like Enthiran, Beast, Petta, Sarkar, and Jailer.
