The Indian government has initiated pilot projects to introduce hydrogen-powered buses and trucks, promoting clean energy in the logistics sector. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, these vehicles will be tested across 10 routes, marking a significant step toward sustainable transport.

Hydrogen Vehicle Deployment and Infrastructure
As part of this initiative, 37 hydrogen-powered buses and trucks will hit Indian roads. These include 15 fuel-cell vehicles and 22 internal combustion engine (ICE) hydrogen vehicles. To support this transition, nine hydrogen refueling stations will be set up across the country. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) officially announced the initiative on March 3, 2025.

Key Goals of the Mission
The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to:
- Promote the use of hydrogen as a fuel in public and commercial transport.
- Develop essential infrastructure, including refueling stations.
- Test safe and efficient operations before scaling up adoption.

This move aligns with India’s larger clean energy and carbon reduction objectives, helping make the transport sector more sustainable.
Investment and Industry Participation
The pilot projects involve leading companies such as Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, Ashok Leyland, HPCL, BPCL, and IOCL. The government has allocated Rs 208 crore in financial support for these projects, expected to be fully operational in 18-24 months.

The Bigger Picture
India launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission on January 4, 2023, with a budget of Rs 19,744 crore allocated until 2029-30. This initiative aims to:
- Reduce fossil fuel dependence and cut carbon emissions.
- Make India a global leader in green hydrogen technology.
- Enhance energy security and promote economic self-reliance.
By investing in hydrogen-powered transport, India is taking a major step toward a sustainable and self-sufficient energy future.
