Larsen & Toubro’s chairman, SN Subrahmanyan, stirred controversy by suggesting employees work on Sundays during a recent interaction. In a viral video, Subrahmanyan stated, “I regret I am not able to make you work on Sundays. If I can, I will be more happy because I work on Sundays.” He further remarked, “What do you do sitting at home? How long can you look at your wife? Come on, get to the office and start working.”

Deepika Padukone Responds

Actor and mental health advocate Deepika Padukone reacted strongly to the remarks. Sharing journalist Faye D’Souza’s post on Instagram, Deepika wrote, “Shocking to see people in such senior positions make such statements. #MentalHealthMatters.”

Social Media Reactions

The video sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning Subrahmanyan’s views on work-life balance and workplace culture. Comparisons were drawn to a similar statement by Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, who had advocated for a 70-hour workweek.

L&T’s Official Statement

In response, an L&T spokesperson highlighted the company’s focus on nation-building and collective effort. The statement emphasized that extraordinary outcomes require extraordinary dedication but reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to fostering a balanced and performance-driven workplace culture.

Deepika’s Mental Health Advocacy

Deepika Padukone, a prominent mental health advocate, has consistently raised awareness about mental well-being. Through her Live Love Laugh Foundation, established in 2015, she aims to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage open conversations.

Debate on Work-Life Balance

The incident has reignited debates around workplace expectations, particularly in India’s fast-paced corporate environment. As voices like Deepika’s gain traction, the importance of mental health and balanced work culture continues to take center stage.
