India’s railway network is renowned for its vast connectivity, with over 13,000 trains operating daily. Among these, one train stands out for its unique and historic service. The Bhakra-Nangal train, running between Nangal, Punjab, and Bhakra, Himachal Pradesh, has been providing free travel for its passengers for the last 75 years.

A Historic Journey Through Scenic Routes

The Bhakra-Nangal train covers a 13 km stretch that passes over the picturesque Sutlej River and the Shivalik Hills. Initially used to transport labourers and supplies during the construction of the Bhakra-Nangal Dam, this train has been in operation since 1948. Over the years, it has become more than just a means of transportation, evolving into a part of India’s rich railway heritage.

Upgrades and Legacy

In 1953, the Bhakra-Nangal train underwent a major upgrade when American-imported diesel engines replaced the original ones. These diesel engines have since become a significant part of the train’s identity, along with its simple but integral seating arrangement. While the seats reflect the long history of the train, they are an essential part of the travel experience, offering passengers a taste of nostalgia.

Why Is the Train Fare-Free?

Despite the growing operational costs—approximately 18 to 20 liters of fuel consumed per hour—the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has chosen to keep the train free for passengers. The decision was made in recognition of the train’s legacy and historical importance. It is not just a train, but a living symbol of tradition, making it a significant part of the region’s culture.

A Popular and Convenient Mode of Travel

The train has become a daily fixture for over 800 commuters, providing an easy and convenient way to travel between Nangal and Bhakra. Not only does it serve the daily transportation needs of local residents, but it also allows visitors to experience the stunning views of the Bhakra-Nangal Dam, one of India’s tallest dams, and the surrounding Shivalik Hills.

Timetable and Daily Operations

The Bhakra-Nangal train operates on a set schedule, ensuring that passengers can rely on it for their daily commute. It departs from Nangal Railway Station at 7:05 am, reaching Bhakra at 8:20 am. The return trip leaves Bhakra at 3:05 pm and arrives back in Nangal at 4:20 pm. This consistent service has made it a vital part of the local transportation network.

A Timeless Symbol of India’s Railway Heritage

For 75 years, the Bhakra-Nangal train has been more than just a means of transport—it has been a symbol of tradition and history. By offering free travel, it continues to honour its legacy, providing a unique and scenic journey for passengers while preserving its place in India’s railway heritage.
