A video of Asle Toje, deputy leader of the Nobel Prize Committee, discussing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has gone viral on social media. The video suggests that PM Modi has been nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize. However, after thorough fact-checking, Channeliam can confirm that this claim is false.

The Origin of the Claim

The viral video, shared widely across platforms, shows Asle Toje praising PM Modi for his role in discouraging Russia from using nuclear weapons during the ongoing conflict. While Toje commended India’s diplomatic efforts, especially under PM Modi’s leadership, these remarks have been misinterpreted to suggest that PM Modi had been nominated for the prestigious award.

Fact: No Nomination for PM Modi

Contrary to the claim, there is no evidence that PM Modi has been nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Prize statutes enforce strict confidentiality regarding the details of nominations. In fact, the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese organisation Nihon Hidankyo for its efforts in promoting a nuclear-free world, particularly by amplifying the voices of survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. The viral video dates back to March 2023 when Toje visited India and praised PM Modi for his efforts in the Russia-Ukraine situation. Afterward, several media outlets speculated that this made PM Modi a leading contender for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, though Toje later clarified that he never said this.

The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize has already been awarded, and PM Modi has not been nominated for it. The viral claim that PM Modi was a Nobel nominee is false. Asle Toje’s statements were made in March 2023 and were later misinterpreted by the media. It’s important to rely on accurate sources to verify such claims, especially when it involves prestigious awards like the Nobel Prize.
