Qatar is now the second Muslim-majority country, after Brunei, to be part of the US Visa Waiver Programme. This allows Qatari citizens to travel to the US for business or tourism without needing a visa.
Eligibility Criteria Met
The US Departments of State and Homeland Security announced that Qatar met the necessary criteria, including low visa refusal rates and minimal overstays. The programme also ensures reciprocal visa-free travel for US citizens to Qatar.
Strategic Partnership
US officials highlighted the growing strategic relationship between the two countries, citing Qatar’s support in various diplomatic efforts, such as Gaza ceasefire negotiations and the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Limited Qatari Population Eligible
Although Qatar’s population exceeds 3 million, only around 320,000 Qatari citizens are eligible for the programme, as the majority of residents are foreign workers or expatriates without Qatari passports.
Electronic Travel Authorization Required
Qatari citizens can stay in the US for up to 90 days, but they must first obtain approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), an online process that doesn’t require an in-person interview.
Reciprocal Visa-Free Travel for US Citizens
Starting 1st October, US citizens will also be able to visit Qatar visa-free for up to 90 days.
