Dubai authorities have unveiled a new pilot program designed to reduce working hours for government employees during the summer. Known as the ‘Our Flexible Summer’ initiative, this scheme will shorten work hours to seven per day at 15 government entities from August 12 to September 30. Additionally, work will be suspended on Fridays for the duration of the pilot.

Extended Weekends for Government Employees
With the new initiative, employees at participating government departments will benefit from an extended weekend. Typically, Dubai government employees enjoy a two-and-a-half-day weekend (half-day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). This initiative will provide an extended weekend for seven weeks, aiming to improve work-life balance.
Purpose and Benefits
The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) has introduced this program to enhance workplace flexibility and safety during the summer months. The initiative also seeks to ensure a better work-life balance for employees and reduce energy consumption in government offices. Although specific participating entities have not been disclosed, the DGHR has highlighted the program’s goal of promoting workplace well-being and efficiency.
Survey Results and Anticipated Impact
A survey conducted by the DGHR assessed the readiness of government agencies to adopt shorter work hours. The positive feedback revealed significant support for changes that enhance employee well-being and work-life balance. The department aims to evaluate the initiative’s impact on productivity, citing global studies that show reduced work hours can boost efficiency.
Comparative Success
The initiative draws inspiration from Sharjah’s experience, where a three-day weekend led to an 88% increase in productivity and a 90% rise in job satisfaction among employees. Customer satisfaction also improved, reaching a 94% service satisfaction rate.

Future Assessments
The DGHR plans to regularly review feedback and compile a final report on the initiative’s outcomes. This report will include recommendations and assess the program’s adaptability across various government entities.
Official Statement
Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director-General of the DGHR, emphasised that the initiative aligns with Dubai’s vision to enhance human resources through innovative solutions. He noted that the program aims to improve employees’ quality of life, promote sustainable resource use, and position Dubai as a city offering a superior lifestyle.
