Chennai’s success story extends beyond these individual accolades. The city also featured prominently in the top 25 Asia ecosystems for talent and experience, underscoring its appeal as a destination for both budding entrepreneurs and seasoned professionals alike.
The Startup Genome report further shed light on Tamil Nadu’s remarkable contribution to the startup ecosystem. During the period from July 1, 2021, to December 31, 2023, the state generated a staggering $27.4 billion in ecosystem value, calculated based on exits and startup valuations. This significant economic impact underscores the vitality and growth potential of Tamil Nadu’s startup landscape.
In response to these encouraging developments, StartupTN, a state initiative fostering startup growth, highlighted the concerted efforts undertaken to bolster the startup ecosystem. The surge in the number of DPIIT-registered startups serves as a testament to these endeavors, with the count soaring from 2,300 in March 2021 to over 8,500 presently. This exponential growth reflects the conducive environment and support mechanisms in place for aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators in Tamil Nadu.
Chennai’s ascent in the startup rankings comes on the heels of previous accolades bestowed upon Tamil Nadu’s startup ecosystem. In 2022, the state was lauded as the best performer in the Startup India’s state startup rankings, recognizing its proactive measures and conducive policies. Furthermore, in 2023, the Atal Innovation Mission acknowledged Tamil Nadu as a model state for its innovation ecosystem, further cementing its reputation as a thriving hub for startups and innovation.
