Lunaz, known for its expertise in electrifying classic cars, has revealed its latest masterpiece – a revamped 1983 short-wheelbase Range Rover Safari. This particular model, famously driven by James Bond in the 1983 film “Octopussy,” has undergone a remarkable transformation compared to Lunaz’s previous fixed-roof classic electric Range Rovers.
Structural Reinforcement and Authentic Exterior
To adapt to the open-top design while maintaining strength and stability, Lunaz has significantly reinforced both the body and chassis of the vehicle. Despite these structural enhancements, the exterior coachwork remains faithful to the original, with this bespoke commission featuring a unique ‘Maya Blue’ finish and a dark blue mohair convertible hood, tailored to the client’s specifications.
Interior Transformation and Technological Advancements
A key focus for the client was the interior design and features, leading to the most extensive interior development ever undertaken by Lunaz. The interior now boasts a complete overhaul, featuring substantial ergonomic and technological improvements. Notably, the original Spartan dashboard and interior have been replaced with a sophisticated, extended 3D-printed console, designed and manufactured in-house over two years. This innovative design will be standard in all future electric Range Rovers by Lunaz.
The composite centre console integrates modern conveniences such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-enabled infotainment, digital controls for climate management, and USB-C ports for device charging. Finished in Mocca Walnut wood with a weatherproof satin lacquer, the console exudes luxury and functionality.
Enhanced Comfort and Performance
Seating within the vehicle has been completely redesigned for improved aesthetics, comfort, and ergonomics. Heated seats crafted with proprietary padding materials ensure a luxurious driving experience. The interior, a culmination of over 1,000 hours of development and production, features soft, durable leather upholstery with Lunaz’s signature fluting design.
Under the hood, Lunaz has equipped the Range Rover Safari with a powerful 280kW electric powertrain, customised to the owner’s preferences, delivering an impressive 375 bhp. This significant increase in power is coupled with zero emissions, a vast improvement over the original V8 engine’s CO2 emissions.
Performance Upgrades and Environmental Benefits
To handle the additional torque generated by the electric powertrain, Lunaz has upgraded the Safari with adjustable dampers, bespoke springs, and advanced braking systems, including regenerative braking. Despite these enhancements, the vehicle retains its original off-road capabilities, including a segment-defining wading depth of 500mm and all original approach, breakover, and departure angles.
With Lunaz’s latest electrified classic, enthusiasts can enjoy the timeless charm of the iconic Range Rover Safari while embracing modern technology and sustainability.
