Emirates Unveils Sustainable Fashion Collection Crafted from Retired Aircraft Materials

A Unique Blend of Innovation and Environmental Responsibility

Emirates, renowned for its commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability, is set to launch an exclusive capsule collection crafted from upcycled materials sourced from retrofitted aircraft. This limited-edition line includes suitcases, backpacks, handbags, accessories, and even shoes – all designed and handcrafted by Emirates tailors at the dedicated cabin workshop in the Emirates Engineering facility in Dubai.

A Stylish Legacy from Iconic Aircraft

Scheduled for release in 2024 at Emirates Official Stores, this distinctive collection offers a chance to own a piece of aviation history. The materials used for these chic accessories have been repurposed from iconic Emirates A380 and 777 aircraft, transforming unexpected items like aluminium headrests, leather from onboard lounges, seatbelts, and even fur from Captain’s seats into fashion-forward pieces.

Transformative Sustainability at Scale

The upcycling initiative is a testament to Emirates’ commitment to sustainability. With more than 14,000kg of materials already recovered from 16 retrofitted aircraft, the project has the potential to salvage up to 270 kg of leather and 627kg of seat fabric per retrofitted aircraft. The initiative not only minimises waste but also champions responsible consumption.

Personalised Pieces and Limited Editions

Crafted on-demand, each piece from the collection is handmade, allowing customers the option to request personalised laser engraving on select items. While aviation enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the release, these exclusive pieces will be available in limited quantities, adding an element of rarity to the collection.

A Sustainable Production Process

The materials used, including high-quality leather from First Class Seats and seat fabrics made of 95% wool, undergo a meticulous cleaning and conditioning process. Freshly laundered and disinfected, the fabrics are then transformed into unique pieces, complete with brand new linings and functional zippers.

The Team Behind the Upcycling Initiative

Emirates employs a team of 14 tailors, officially known as Engineering Maintenance Assistants, who not only maintain the interiors of the airline’s vast fleet but also play a crucial role in upcycling initiatives. Four dedicated tailors are currently fully committed to crafting upcycled products and collaborating with suppliers to explore innovative ways to repurpose various materials.

Aligning Passion with Purpose

Ahmed Safa, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President for Engineering, expressed pride in the upcycling initiative. He emphasised how the project aligns with both innovation and sustainability goals. Furthermore, all proceeds from the collection will be channelled to worthy causes through the Emirates Airline Foundation.

The Emirates Retrofit Project

This fashion collection emerges as a result of Emirates’ extensive retrofit project launched in August 2022. Aimed at elevating customer experience, the project involves upgrading the interiors of 120 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. Managed entirely by Emirates’ Engineering team, the retrofit includes the installation of new Premium Economy seats, refurbishing of First Class suites, and upgrading over 5,000 Business Class seats.

In essence, Emirates continues to soar not only in the skies but also in its commitment to sustainable practices, innovation, and giving back to the community through initiatives like the upcycled fashion collection.
