The introduction of a toilet-cleaning robot by New York Company Somatic is shedding a positive light on the potential of AI and automation in everyday tasks. Here’s what you need to know about this innovative robot:

Autonomous Toilet-Cleaning

Somatic has developed an autonomous trolley-bot that specializes in cleaning office bathrooms. The robot is designed to handle routine sanitation tasks, which include disinfecting surfaces, spraying water, lifting toilet lids to clean underneath, and vacuuming dry.

Service Model

Somatic offers a service where the robot can be installed at an office building to clean bathrooms for 40 hours a week. The service costs $1,000 per month, with no upfront fees. This equates to roughly $5.68 per hour, which is below the federal minimum wage in the US.

Autonomous Operation

The robot operates autonomously, navigating the building, opening doors, and using elevators to reach different floors. It follows a pre-mapped plan using video and 3D depth data. If it encounters unexpected situations, it can notify janitorial staff and move on to the next area.

Setup Process

Before deployment, Somatic uses a sensor kit to map the building’s layout, ensuring the robot can navigate the space effectively. The company employs virtual reality to simulate the robot’s cleaning process and refine its actions.

Human Collaboration

The robot is designed to complement human janitorial staff by handling routine cleaning tasks. It doesn’t aim to replace them entirely but can free them from repetitive chores.

Commercial Availability

Somatic’s toilet-cleaning robot service is already commercially available. While the exact number of deployed robots remains undisclosed, the technology represents a step toward automating tasks that are often considered undesirable or mundane.

The introduction of such robots not only showcases the potential of AI and automation in improving efficiency and hygiene but also highlights the role of technology in addressing routine tasks that can be physically demanding or less desirable for human workers.
