In a significant breakthrough, researchers in Abu Dhabi have developed a new method for rapid COVID-19 testing. This low-cost and disposable adhesive bandage has the ability to detect COVID-19 antibodies within minutes, making it a valuable tool for mass testing and monitoring the spread of the pandemic.
A Promising Biomarker Detection Solution
The adhesive bandage, created by researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi, relies on gold nanoparticles to quickly detect immune antibodies in the bloodstream. These antibodies, known as IgM and IgG, are naturally produced as a response to SARS-CoV-2 infection, making them valuable biomarkers for identifying infected individuals and tracking the progress of pandemics.
Versatile Technology for Future Pandemics
The innovative bandage technology is not only affordable and user-friendly, but it can also be easily modified to detect other pathogenic infections in future pandemics. By utilising antigens specific to emerging pathogens, the bandage can be adapted to rapidly identify various infectious diseases.
Simple and Effective Testing at Home
To perform the test, individuals can apply the adhesive bandage to a pinprick fingertip, similar to how a regular bandage is used to cover wounds. The bandage incorporates nanotechnology-based gold nanoparticles with engineered antigens specific to SARS-CoV-2. These nanoparticles interact with IgM and IgG antibodies, resulting in a colour change that indicates the individual’s infection status within minutes.
Affordable and Scalable Testing Solution
The disposable nature of the bandage, coupled with its low cost, holds promise for large-scale detection and screening. This technology can be utilised in various settings, including homes, public facilities, and rural regions with limited access to advanced testing facilities.
Potential for Future Applications
The research team, led by Associate Professor Mohammad Qasaimeh, envisions expanding the application of this testing technology to detect and screen other emerging viral infections. They also plan to incorporate biodegradable porous microneedles into the bandage, facilitating efficient finger pricking for enhanced usability.
The groundbreaking adhesive bandage developed by researchers in Abu Dhabi offers a rapid and cost-effective solution for COVID-19 testing. Its ability to detect antibodies within minutes and potential for scalability make it a valuable tool for monitoring and controlling infectious diseases. By combining this innovative technology with smartphone readouts and dedicated mobile apps, it opens up possibilities for early identification and targeted interventions, ultimately contributing to global efforts in combating and preventing future outbreaks and pandemics.
