Mercedes-Benz, the German luxury carmaker, has announced its plan to launch four electric vehicles (EVs) in the Indian market over the next 8-12 months.

The company’s focus on EVs in India is part of its global strategy to shift towards sustainable mobility and reduce carbon emissions.

The Indian Government has been pushing for EV adoption in the country to reduce pollution and dependence on oil imports. As a result, the demand for electric vehicles in India has been steadily increasing. Last year, Mercedes-Benz India posted a 41 percent growth in its total sales with a record 15,822 units as compared to the 11,242 units sold a year ago. Its previous best sales were achieved in 2018 at 15,583 units.

When enquired about the release of the new four EV models, Santosh Iyer, Managing Director, and Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-Benz India, responded that it would happen within the next 8 to 12 months. This would involve a combination of importing fully built units and importing fully knocked down units that would then be assembled at the company’s Chakan plant. By 2027, the business anticipates that electric vehicles would account for 25% of its overall sales in India.

Mercedes-Benz has implemented its direct to customer’ model — ‘Retail of the Future (ROTF)

Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Martin Schwenk said, “We are committed to bringing the latest sustainable mobility solutions to India. With the launch of four EVs in the next 8-12 months, we will provide our customers with a range of options to choose from and enable them to contribute towards a greener future.”

The move towards EVs is also part of the luxury carmaker’s global strategy, with the company aiming to have a carbon-neutral passenger car fleet by 2039. Mercedes-Benz has already launched several EVs globally, including the EQS sedan, the EQA compact SUV, and the EQB, a compact SUV that is set to launch later this year.

Mercedes-Benz is not the only luxury carmaker to focus on EVs in India. Rival brands such as Audi, BMW, and Jaguar Land Rover have also launched or announced plans to launch electric models in the Indian market.

The launch of four EVs by Mercedes-Benz in India is a significant step toward the country’s transition to sustainable mobility. It also highlights the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and providing customers with the latest sustainable mobility solutions.
