This pongal, Ajith and ilayathalapathi Vijay will compete at the box office. Globally, fans of both Ajith and Vijay are awaiting the release of the movies on January 11. Advanced booking has begun in Kerala, too. There is no doubt that Kollywood will witness the biggest clashes in its history.
Varisu, starring Vijay, is directed by Vamshi Paidipally, who won the national award for Mahesh Babu-starrer Maharshi. Thunivu, featuring Ajith, is directed by H. Vinod, director of Nerkonda Paarvai, and Valimai. Manju Warrier is Ajith’s heroine in Thunivu. Her presence is an exciting factor for Malayalees.
When it comes to pre-release business, Vijay’s Varisu leads with Rs 142 crores while Ajith’s Thunivu collected Rs 86 core. Varisu’s rights in Tamil Nadu has been sold for Rs 72 crore. In Kerala, rights got Rs 6.5 crore. It garnered Rs 18 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. From other parts of India, it received Rs 17 crore, and from overseas Rs 35 crore. The Hindi dubbing rights of Varisu amounts to Rs 34 crore, and T-Series bought the audio rights for Rs 10 crore.
OTT platform Amazon Prime got Varisu’s rights for Rs 75 crore. Sun TV is the official satellite partner and gave Rs 57 crore. The theater rights of Ajith’s Thunivu was sold for Rs 60 crore to Red Giant movies. Unlike Vijay, Ajith doesn’t have a fan base in Kerala and Karnataka. Hence, the rights in Kerala and Karnataka was sold for Rs 2.5 crore and Rs 3.6 crore respectively. Hindi dubbing rights was sold for Rs 25 crore and music rights for Rs 2 crore. The film got Rs 1.5 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Netflix got the digital rights for Rs 65 crore and Kalainjar TV got the satellite rights for Rs 20 crore. The overseas rights was sold for Rs 14 crore.
In Bookmyshow, Thunivu has more likes than Varisu. Varisu got 2.72 lakh likes while Thunivu got 5.59 lakh likes. However, when it comes to pre-booking, Vijay’s Varisu leads. The game changer would the box office collection of these movies.
