Avi Kapur, an entrepreneur focused on combating AI-driven cyber threats, is already making waves in Silicon Valley with his startup, Extrian Security. His journey took an unconventional turn when he decided to leave the University of California, Berkeley, after just a year studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. This decision was driven by his determination to devote himself entirely to his startup venture.

A Passion for AI from a Young Age
Kapur’s journey into artificial intelligence began long before his time at Berkeley. Growing up in Dubai, he was deeply interested in AI from an early age. He worked on AI research throughout high school, even receiving an invitation to the Bay Area at the age of 16, where he met his future co-founder, Luke Bousfield. Their shared interest in AI research would lay the foundation for their startup.
“I got to work on hard and interesting problems,” Kapur recalls. “It was very formative for everything that followed. It all blended into my passion for Math and Computer Science, which I was already studying at school.”

Academic Excellence and Early Recognition
Before embarking on his entrepreneurial journey, Kapur was already an accomplished student. He ranked first in the UAE Math Olympiad, showcasing his strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Leaving College to Pursue a Vision
Kapur’s decision to leave Berkeley wasn’t a light one, but his growing conviction in his startup idea made it clear that he needed to be in San Francisco to be closer to the heart of innovation. Yet, as time passed, his deep belief in his business idea pulled him away from the university.
“After my first year, I decided to drop out and focus on my idea,” Kapur explains. “I was truly convinced about the potential of the concept, and I realized this was a pivotal moment.”
A Supportive Family and an Early Win
Although the decision to drop out was significant, Kapur found unwavering support from his parents. “They saw my conviction in the idea and the time I was dedicating. They didn’t really question it too much,” he shares.

One of the early signs of success came when Kapur and Bousfield secured a billion-dollar biotech company as one of their first clients. This gave them the confidence to move forward with their venture.
Revolutionizing Cybersecurity with AI
Extrian Security, Kapur’s startup, is taking a proactive approach to cybersecurity. Unlike traditional methods that react to threats, their AI-powered technology identifies and neutralizes complex cyber threats like deepfakes and AI-generated phishing attacks before they can cause damage.
“The landscape of cybersecurity is rapidly evolving with AI,” Kapur notes. “We’re pioneering solutions that stay ahead of sophisticated threats.”
This innovative approach has already gained recognition from cybersecurity experts, attracted investments from top-tier venture capital firms, and secured strategic partnerships with major tech companies.
Future Plans and a Return to Dubai
As for the future, Kapur is excited about the possibility of returning to Dubai. “I’d love to come back to Dubai. There’s so much potential here. We’ll definitely be expanding,” he says, signaling plans to further grow his venture in the UAE.
Kapur’s journey from student to entrepreneur reflects his deep belief in AI and cybersecurity, as well as his willingness to take bold risks to bring his vision to life.
