Amid growing concerns over ethanol-blended fuel, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a detailed 10-point clarification stating that E20 petrol—a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol—is safe for vehicles designed or approved to use it. The government said the fuel has undergone extensive testing and is backed by scientific studies, regulatory standards and global experience.

The ministry clarified that E20 petrol does not damage engines, invalidate vehicle warranties or lead to the rejection of motor insurance claims when used in vehicles compatible with the fuel. It also dismissed claims circulating on social media that the ethanol blending programme was introduced without adequate testing or technical validation.
According to the government, the ethanol blending programme has helped reduce crude oil imports, strengthen India’s energy security and support farmers by increasing demand for domestically produced ethanol. It also contributes to lower vehicular emissions and aligns with India’s clean energy goals. The Centre noted that India achieved its target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol ahead of schedule in December 2025.
However, the government advised owners of older vehicles to follow their manufacturers’ recommendations before using E20 fuel. While many newer vehicles sold in India are E20-compatible, motorists should verify compatibility through their owner’s manual or with the vehicle manufacturer to ensure optimal performance.
