Kerala has unveiled a mobile application that allows the public to report traffic violations in real time. This initiative marks the first of its kind in India, empowering citizens to actively contribute to road safety.
Developed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways with support from the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the app will be inaugurated by Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar on Friday. The application aims to simplify the reporting process, encouraging individuals to act instead of feeling frustrated by violations.
Users can report traffic offences by uploading photos and videos directly through the app. Along with visual evidence, GPS data will be captured to indicate the precise location and time of the incident, facilitating prompt action by authorities.
To use the app, individuals can download the “NextGen mParivahan” application from the Play Store. After installation, users can navigate to the “Citizen Sentinel” section and click the “Report Traffic Violation” button. It is important to use the “Register Complaint” feature to capture relevant footage.
Transport Commissioner C.H. Nagaraju informed Mathrubhumi that users can log crucial details, such as the vehicle registration number, type of violation, location, date, and time of the incident. A comment box is also available for any additional information the user may wish to provide.
Once a complaint is submitted, it is sent directly to the relevant authorities from the server in Delhi. In Kerala, these complaints will be forwarded to the Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) in the respective areas where the violations occurred. Enforcement officers are mandated to address the complaints within a specified timeframe.
The app prioritises user privacy by protecting the identity of those reporting violations. Officers reviewing the complaints will not have access to the identities of the complainants.
