Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has teamed up with Sarla Aviation to explore innovative air mobility solutions aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Bengaluru. This collaboration will focus on developing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft that promise to revolutionize urban travel.
Hassle-Free Travel to Kempegowda International Airport
Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), located about 40 km from the city center, may soon offer a more convenient travel option. BIAL announced its partnership with Sarla Aviation to explore cutting-edge air mobility solutions. The goal is to make air travel cleaner, faster, and more accessible.
A New Chapter in Advanced Air Mobility
BIAL expressed its commitment to Advanced Air Mobility on social media, highlighting the development of seven-seater eVTOL aircraft. This initiative aims to create operational models that will enhance the reach of air travel.
Transforming Urban Mobility
Sarla Aviation’s website outlines its ambition to transform urban mobility in four major Indian cities: Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Pune. The company aims to provide aerial ride-sharing services at fares comparable to current rides from services like Uber and Ola, thus making transportation more accessible.
Fast and Affordable Travel Options
According to Sarla Aviation, the route from Bengaluru airport to Electronics City could take just 19 minutes, costing around ₹1,700. In contrast, traditional cabs could take over two hours and cost ₹2,500 for the same journey.
Addressing Congestion Challenges
Adrian Schmidt, co-founder and CEO of Sarla Aviation, emphasized the significance of this partnership in tackling Bengaluru’s traffic woes. He noted that current travel times from areas like Indiranagar to the airport can take up to 1.5 hours, which could be reduced to just 5 minutes with flying taxis.
Timeline for Launch
While the partnership is promising, a BIAL source indicated that operational launch could be two to three years away. The eVTOL ecosystem still needs to mature, including regulatory approvals and prototype development.
Advantages of eVTOL Aircraft
eVTOL aircraft offer substantial benefits over traditional helicopters, primarily due to their electric propulsion systems. They are cleaner, quieter, and more cost-effective, making them a suitable choice for urban air mobility.
Future Developments in Urban Air Mobility
Previously, Thumby Aviation and Blade India attempted to launch intracity heli-taxi services but faced challenges due to low demand. Meanwhile, companies like California-based Archer are exploring opportunities to introduce electric air taxis to India by 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
