TN’s Move to Empower Rural Women

Tamil Nadu has taken a prominent step towards empowering rural women entrepreneurs with the launch of a new initiative, TN-RISE (Tamil Nadu – Rural Incubator and Start-Up Enabler). This platform was unveiled by Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Youth Welfare and Programme Implementation, under the ‘Vazhndhu Kattuvom’ (Let’s Prove Ourselves By Living) scheme 2.0. The initiative is backed by financial assistance from the World Bank.

The announcement follows a promise made by Chief Minister M K Stalin in the State Assembly, aimed at fostering a new generation of women entrepreneurs from rural areas. Udhayanidhi Stalin emphasized that TN-RISE is a reflection of the progressive traditions of the Dravidian Movement, which has long championed the cause of women’s empowerment.

Udhayanidhi Stalin highlighted the dual challenges faced by women—material and cultural enslavement. He noted that while organizations like the World Bank work to free women from material constraints, the Dravidian movement has historically focused on liberating women from cultural subjugation. “Our Dravidian Model government is proud to join hands with The World Bank in empowering women in the material domain as well,” he said.

The TN-RISE platform addresses the obstacles women entrepreneurs often face in advancing their business ideas and accessing critical resources such as finance, credit, and marketing opportunities. The initiative is designed to eliminate these barriers by providing tailored market linkages, financial support, and operational guidance. Additionally, it offers high-end business incubation services specifically for women-led rural enterprises.

Udhayanidhi Stalin announced that TN-RISE has already forged partnerships with several multinational companies, including Flipkart and HP. These collaborations will provide mentorship and training for budding women entrepreneurs in Tamil Nadu.

The Minister also called on industries and entrepreneurs to collaborate with the State government in this endeavor to cultivate more women entrepreneurs across Tamil Nadu. “Together, we can support and nurture the potential of rural women, driving economic growth and fostering innovation,” he urged.
