Maruti Suzuki, known for its cautious approach to new technologies, has made a bold move into the electric vehicle (EV) market with its unveiling of the eVX electric SUV concept at Auto Expo 2023. This marked a significant departure from the company’s traditional stance. Further bolstering its electric ambitions, the parent company Suzuki showcased the eWX concept EV at the Bangkok International Motor Show, followed by a presentation at the Japan Mobility Show.
The eWX concept, described as an EV mini-wagon by Suzuki, challenges conventions with its compact design, measuring just 3.4 meters in length. It adheres to Japan’s Kei car restrictions and features a boxy, tallboy design reminiscent of the Wagon R, albeit smaller than the S-Presso sold in India. Notably, Suzuki has filed a patent for the eWX design in India, hinting at potential future developments in the Indian market.
Although detailed specifications for the eWX remain undisclosed, industry insiders anticipate it to come equipped with a standard single-motor setup, with a projected range of 230 km. The concept version showcases unique design elements, including the absence of traditional headlamps, a curved windshield extending beyond the A-pillars, and a lack of B-pillars. Additionally, it features body cladding and fully covered wheel caps, accentuating its futuristic aesthetic.
Maruti Suzuki’s plans for the eWX in India are yet to be fully revealed. However, reports suggest that an eWX-based hatchback is slated to join Maruti’s portfolio around 2026-27. This hatchback, built on the K-EV platform with heavy localization, aims to compete with offerings such as the Tiago EV and MG Comet EV.
In addition to the eWX-based hatchback, Maruti is also gearing up for the launch of its first EV offering in India, the eVX mid-size electric SUV. Set to rival the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV, the production of the eVX SUV has been rescheduled to February 2025, delayed from its initial target of September 2024. These developments underscore Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to embracing electric mobility and staying competitive in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape
