Women lead 50.8% of Tamil Nadu’s more than 16,000 registered startups, highlighting the growing participation of women in the state’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. StartupTN Chairman Singai G. Ramachandran shared the figures at the Best of Best (BoB) Conference and Awards 2026 in Chennai on November 3.

Ramachandran stressed that increasing women’s participation in business requires more than recruitment and representation. He called for infrastructure and workplace facilities that enable women to pursue professional opportunities and leadership roles.
He also pointed out that traditional assumptions about gender-specific roles continue to influence workplaces and society. Such mindsets, he said, need to change to create more inclusive opportunities.
Tamil Nadu’s Women-Led Startup Ecosystem
Tamil Nadu has more than 16,000 registered startups, with women leading 50.8% of them, according to StartupTN. The figure reflects the growing role of women founders in building businesses across sectors.
The state has been expanding its startup ecosystem through initiatives supporting entrepreneurship, innovation and access to business opportunities. Strengthening infrastructure, funding access, mentorship and market connections remains important to sustaining this growth.
Focus on Inclusive Workplaces
The conference also saw the launch of the Circle of Inclusive Cultures (CIC), an initiative by Avtar Career Creators and Seramount. It aims to help organisations share practices and strengthen workplace diversity, inclusion and employee well-being.
The initiative will bring together CEOs, human resource leaders and inclusion professionals through peer-learning platforms.
Asian Paints Chairman R. Seshasayee also spoke about the persistence of patriarchal structures and the need to address gender-based barriers.
The event recognised organisations for their workplace inclusion and wellness efforts. Sudhakar Dokare of Tata Starbucks received the Male Ally Legacy Award for his contribution to gender-inclusive workplaces.
The discussions highlighted the importance of creating supportive environments where women can participate, lead and grow across India’s business ecosystem.
