Kerala currently has railway projects worth more than ₹20,000 crore under execution, covering new lines, multitracking, flyovers, underpasses and station redevelopment, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a meeting with MPs from the state.
The ongoing works include nine multitracking and new-line projects, 145 flyovers and underpasses, and 19 station redevelopment projects. The focus is on expanding railway capacity and improving connectivity across the state.
Kerala’s railway allocation has increased to ₹3,795 crore in 2026-27, compared with ₹372 crore in 2014, according to Vaishnaw. The state has also achieved 100% railway electrification, while 16 stations have been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Several major projects are also being taken up, including the Angamali-Sabarimala new line and Trivandrum-Kanyakumari doubling. Surveys are underway for more than 800 km of third- and fourth-line augmentation across six sections to strengthen rail capacity.
However, land acquisition remains a major challenge. Vaishnaw said 618 hectares are required for railway projects in Kerala, of which only 78 hectares have been acquired, leaving 540 hectares still to be secured. The Railways has already deposited ₹1,976 crore with the Kerala government for land acquisition.
The expansion is aimed at strengthening Kerala’s railway network, increasing capacity and improving passenger connectivity across the state.
