Starbucks Coffee Company is planning to establish a technology hub in Chennai, giving Tamil Nadu’s technology sector a major boost. According to the Tamil Nadu government, the Chennai centre will be Starbucks’ first corporate technology hub outside the United States.
Chennai Hub to Create 800 Technology Jobs
Starbucks and the Tamil Nadu government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up the new technology centre. The facility is expected to create around 800 technology jobs, with recruitment taking place in phases based on the company’s requirements.
Sources said the positions could offer a median annual salary of around Rs 35 lakh, making the centre a significant addition to Chennai’s high-skilled technology employment market.
Centre to Support Starbucks’ Global Operations
The Chennai hub will become part of Starbucks’ global technology network, adding to the company’s existing technology centres in Seattle and Nashville in the US.
The new facility will work with Starbucks’ technology and business teams in the US and other locations. It is expected to support the company’s technology requirements and contribute to its operations across global markets.
Technology Hub Separate From India Retail Business
The new Chennai technology centre will function independently of Starbucks’ retail operations in India.
Starbucks operates its Indian retail business through a joint venture with Tata Consumer Products. The technology hub will have a separate role focused on technology development and global business support.
Chennai’s Technology Talent Attracts Starbucks
Starbucks said Chennai was selected because of its strong pool of technology professionals, established engineering ecosystem, high employee retention and infrastructure.
The city’s leading educational institutions were also among the factors considered by the company. Starbucks said these strengths would help it build and expand its technology capabilities in India.
Tamil Nadu Pushes Global Technology Centres
The Starbucks investment comes as Tamil Nadu steps up efforts to attract global companies and expand its position as an investment and technology destination.
The state has identified key technology corridors in Chennai, including OMR or Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Mount-Poonamallee High Road and Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road, as locations for major technology and global capability centres.
State Offers Incentives for GCCs
Tamil Nadu is also implementing its Special Scheme to Promote Global Capability Centres for 2024–2027.
Under the scheme, eligible large global companies can receive incentives for creating high-paying jobs. The programme includes payroll support of 30 percent in the first year, 20 percent in the second year and 10 percent in the third year.
Starbucks Joins Growing List of Global Companies
Starbucks is among several major international companies expanding their technology and global capability operations in Tamil Nadu.
Recent announcements involving companies such as Walgreens, Sigma Technology Group and EY have further strengthened Chennai and Tamil Nadu’s position as a destination for large technology and business centres.
