The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched software that allows banks and fintech companies to integrate Aadhaar face authentication into their digital platforms.

The move is aimed at expanding the use of facial recognition for identity verification and enabling more seamless digital journeys across financial services. Aadhaar face authentication can support processes such as account opening, re-KYC and other customer verification requirements.
The development comes as India’s Aadhaar ecosystem moves towards greater use of digital and biometric authentication. UIDAI is currently processing around 100 million Aadhaar authentications a day and is preparing to scale this to 250–300 million daily authentications, according to UIDAI chairman Neelkantha Mishra.
Facial and fingerprint liveness testing are also being strengthened with artificial intelligence to help detect fraudulent authentication attempts.
For banks and fintech companies, wider access to Aadhaar face authentication could reduce dependence on physical verification and make remote customer onboarding and other financial services more convenient.
The move further strengthens Aadhaar’s role as a key layer of India’s digital public infrastructure and comes amid growing adoption of biometric authentication across digital financial services. In June, more than 611 million UPI transactions were authenticated using biometrics, including fingerprints and facial recognition.
