Indian Railways is preparing to introduce Vande Bharat Sleeper trains in Andhra Pradesh, marking a major upgrade in long-distance rail travel in the state.
The sleeper version of Vande Bharat trains is expected to begin operations in the Vijayawada Railway Division by Dussehra, according to railway officials. Unlike the existing chair-car Vande Bharat services, the new trains are designed for overnight and long-distance journeys with improved comfort and premium facilities.
Currently, Vande Bharat Express trains connect Vijayawada with destinations including Secunderabad, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam. The upcoming sleeper trains aim to offer passengers a more comfortable alternative for longer routes.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper coaches feature modern interiors, improved lighting, better space utilisation, upgraded washrooms, digital passenger information systems, CCTV surveillance, and fully air-conditioned compartments. Designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 kmph, the train is expected to have a 16-coach configuration.
The sleeper variant is already operating on routes such as Howrah-Kamakhya and Mumbai-Bengaluru. With its enhanced facilities and faster travel experience, the service is expected to attract passengers who currently prefer air travel for long-distance journeys. It could provide a convenient option by reducing airport-related delays and baggage restrictions while offering a premium rail experience.
