Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited political action drama Jana Nayagan has created a massive buzz at theatres across India, with packed shows and record advance bookings marking a strong start for the film.
The film, which was delayed due to pending censor certification, released on July 23 across around 1,000 screens in Tamil Nadu. Advance bookings witnessed huge demand, with several theatres reporting sold-out shows from morning screenings to late-night shows.
According to booking platforms, thousands of tickets were sold within hours, while multiplex chain PVR INOX reported more than three lakh advance bookings for the Vijay starrer. Trade analysts expect the film to record a strong opening at the Indian box office.
The release has gained additional attention as it marks Vijay’s final film before focusing fully on his political career as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Fans across Tamil Nadu organised celebrations at theatres, with special events, music shows and first-day-first-show gatherings planned across cities.
Before Jana Nayagan, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey delivered a major boost to Indian theatres, drawing strong audiences and becoming one of the biggest Hollywood releases in the country. The success of both films has increased confidence among exhibitors about the revival of theatrical entertainment.
With upcoming releases including major Indian and Hollywood films, cinema operators are expecting the strong box office momentum to continue throughout the year.
