India clinched a historic ICC Men’s T20 World Cup win yesterday, defeating the New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Sanju Samson’s explosive 89 off 46 balls and Jasprit Bumrah’s four-wicket haul (4/15) were the standout performances that ensured India defended their title for the first time in T20 World Cup history.

Samson and Sharma Blaze the Powerplay

India’s innings got off to a flying start as Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma put together 98 runs in just 43 balls, including a record 92-run powerplay — the highest in T20 World Cup history. Ishan Kishan added a blistering 54 off 25 balls, and Shivam Dube finished with a rapid 26 from 8 deliveries, taking India to a commanding total of 255/5.

Bumrah and India’s Bowling Attack Dominate

Chasing 256, New Zealand’s innings never gained momentum. Jasprit Bumrah led a disciplined bowling attack, claiming 4 wickets for 15 runs and earning the Player of the Match award. Axar Patel took three wickets, while Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Abhishek Sharma chipped in with one wicket each. New Zealand’s top-order collapsed early, ensuring India’s dominance from start to finish.

Historic Achievements

With this win, India became the first men’s team to defend the T20 World Cup and the first to lift the trophy on home soil. This also marks India’s third T20 World Cup title overall, completing a “Triple Crown” alongside the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy wins.

Reactions from Leaders and Tech Giants

The victory drew praise from leaders and global figures alike. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “remarkable triumph,” highlighting the team’s skill, determination, and teamwork. President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the players, management, and support staff, noting India’s record as the only team to win three T20 World Cups and defend the title. Google CEO Sundar Pichai expressed excitement, congratulating the team and commending the tournament’s atmosphere. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella singled out Samson and Bumrah, calling their performances “absolutely incredible” and praising the team’s impact throughout the tournament.

Standout Performers

Sanju Samson’s innings of 89, combined with Abhishek Sharma’s 52, set the tone for India’s imposing total. Jasprit Bumrah’s precision bowling ensured New Zealand never recovered, cementing India’s dominance in both batting and bowling. The team’s collective performance highlighted why they are widely regarded as one of the greatest T20 sides in history. India’s emphatic win thrilled fans in the stadium and captivated cricket followers across the country, confirming that the Men in Blue have set a new standard in T20 cricket.
