Amazon Ring has introduced a new AI feature called Search Party for Dogs, designed to help reunite lost pets with their owners. The system uses neighborhood Ring cameras to scan for missing dogs and alert owners if a potential match is spotted. Since its launch, the feature has successfully helped bring home 99 dogs.
How Search Party Works
When a pet owner reports a missing dog through the Ring app, nearby outdoor Ring cameras start monitoring for animals that match the description. Using computer vision trained on tens of thousands of dog videos, the AI can identify breeds, sizes, fur patterns, and other distinguishing features. Unlike traditional methods like posters or social media posts, this process happens quietly in the background. If a camera spots a possible match, the camera owner is notified and can review the footage, maintaining full control over privacy.

Technology Behind the Feature
Search Party relies on computer vision rather than collars or microchips, which are often missing when pets go missing. According to Ring’s chief inventor Jamie Siminoff, the feature aims to replace the helplessness owners feel when a dog disappears. Instead of driving around calling their pets, owners can now mobilize entire communities within minutes using technology many households already have.
Real-Life Success Stories
The system has already shown tangible results. Kylee, a Ring user in Kansas, was reunited with her dog Nyx within 15 minutes after he escaped the backyard. Similarly, a military veteran named Kurt located his service dog Lainey the same day she went missing, thanks to a Search Party alert.
Expanding Access and Support
Amazon recently expanded Search Party so that anyone in the U.S. can start a search, even without owning a Ring camera. The company also committed $1 million to equip animal shelters nationwide with Ring cameras. With over 1 million lost pet reports shared in the Ring Neighbors app last year, the expansion addresses a widespread need.
A Quiet Success Story for AI
Unlike many AI applications, Search Party operates discreetly. Footage is not shared automatically, participation is optional, and data is kept private. According to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, the feature highlights how AI can solve real-world problems by focusing on practical outcomes, such as helping lost dogs return home. The growing list of successful reunions demonstrates that this approach is working.
