Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that nine leading British universities will establish campuses in India. The University of Southampton has already inaugurated its Gurugram campus, welcoming its first batch of students.
This move represents a major step in India-UK educational collaboration and aligns with India’s National Education Policy 2020, aiming to provide Indian students access to world-class education without leaving the country.

Expanding Access to Global Education
Five prestigious UK universities have committed to opening campuses in major Indian cities. Alongside Southampton:
- University of Liverpool – Bangalore
- University of York – Mumbai
- University of Aberdeen – Mumbai
- University of Bristol – Mumbai (Enterprise Campus to open in Summer 2026)
These campuses are designed to promote collaborative research, strengthen academia-industry partnerships, and enhance skill development and innovation.
Strengthening India-UK Relations
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited India from October 8–9, reviewing the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership under the Vision 2035 roadmap. The 10-year plan focuses on areas including trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, security, climate, energy, health, education, and people-to-people connections.
Starmer’s visit coincided with the largest-ever UK business delegation, reflecting renewed momentum in bilateral ties. The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement recently signed is expected to reduce import costs, create employment opportunities, and boost trade and industry benefits in both countries.
Vision 2035: A New Era in Education
Launched during PM Modi’s UK visit in July 2025, the India-UK Vision 2035 roadmap opens new avenues for higher education cooperation. Establishing UK university campuses in India is expected to:
- Offer Indian students a global-standard education.
- Encourage joint research projects between Indian and UK institutions.
- Strengthen links between academia and industry.
This initiative is seen as a major milestone in India-UK educational ties, bringing world-class learning closer to home while reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
