A UK Royal Navy F-35B fighter jet was forced to divert and land at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala due to adverse weather conditions that prevented it from returning to the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales. The landing was safely executed, prioritising the pilot’s safety.

Engineering Issue on Ground

Following its safe landing, the aircraft encountered an engineering issue while on the ground. Engineers from HMS Prince of Wales inspected the aircraft and concluded that the problem required the involvement of a UK-based specialist team. At present, there is no estimated timeline for completing the repair.

Relocation to Avoid Airport Disruption

To avoid disrupting routine airport operations, the F-35B will be shifted to the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility hangar once the required equipment and UK engineering teams arrive in India.

Strong Cooperation with Indian Authorities

The British High Commission expressed gratitude to Indian authorities for their continued support during the diversion and ongoing repair process. They acknowledged the close coordination with the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, and the airport authorities in Thiruvananthapuram.

Sign of Deepening Defence Ties

The UK appreciated India’s swift response, logistical help, and secure handling of the situation, calling it a reflection of the growing collaboration and trust between the Indian and UK armed forces.
